About Lo Nigro - Murphy Genealogy
This website was created as a means of displaying my family genealogy, predominantly
that of my mother's family, the Lo Nigros, and Murphy side of my father's family. This
site mostly contains my direct ancestral lines and many branches of my family tree are
far from complete. I will be filling these missing branches out as time provides. I
also have many photos from various lines to upload. Hopefully this site will enable me
to connect with and meet new family members and allow me to share the information I
have with any who may be interested. If you have any questions, comments, or share
interest in any of the families or areas listed here please feel free to contact me or
comment in my guestbook.

About The Lo Nigro and Murphy Families

The Lo Nigro name is mostly found in southern Italy and Sicily. It means "the black", and is likely a nickname for an immigrant of northern Africa such as Algeria. I have also heard that it may be a name adopted by a Jewish immigrant. My Lo Nigro family is from Palermo, Sicily, and the majority of the line going back into the mid 1700s are tied in with many Arberesh families in the Albanian commune of Piana degli Albanesi. Modern carriers of the Lo Nigro name are common throughout Italy as well as in Chicago, New York, New Orleans, and St Louis. The Murphy name is of Irish origin, meaning "descendant of the sea warrior." The exact origin of this family is not known, but we know the earliest ancestor, John Murphy, arrived in Georgia from Ireland in the late 1700s. Descendants of this Murphy family spread all over the southern half of the US as the family moved from Georgia and Alabama westward to Arkansas and Louisiana. In addition to the Lo Nigro and Murphy families, I have research interests in several other names as well. A nonexaustive list includes Anglin, Brantley, Carnesi, Clesceri, Cruce, Drago, Stringfellow, and Sumners.

Things I Would Like To Know

Are there any photos of Vincenzo Lo Nigro, b. Piana degli Albanesi. The etymology of the Clesceri surname Were the Stringfellows Scottish or English?
